- Description: Thai banks are required to destroy a card the moment it is captured for a wrong PIN, and nobody can overrule your issuer from ten thousand kilometres away. Here is how to not be that person.

Three wrong PIN entries and the machine keeps the card. Then a cheerful woman in the branch tells you, apologetically and with total truth, that bank policy requires it to be destroyed, and there is a form, and the form takes a week, and the form destroys the card.

This is the single most upsetting thing that happens to a traveller in Thailand, and it is entirely avoidable.

## Why the card gets taken and then destroyed

**Enter a PIN wrongly three times and your own bank tells the** [**ATM**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-atm-fees-explained/) **network to capture the card.** This is instant, automated, and happens before you have finished the third attempt. The machine prints a slip with a code explaining why, and the screen tells you to contact your bank.

**And then the card is destroyed,** which is now the stated policy of the Thai banks, and for a foreign card it is effectively the end of the card. The branch has no authority to reverse the instruction your issuer sent.

**Which means the single most important thing about using a Thai ATM is that there is a machine in a bank branch twenty metres away.** Inside a bank, with staff, a mistake is a form. At a standalone machine on a street corner, a mistake is a destroyed card in another country.

## Where the good ATMs are

**Bank branches, during opening hours, and preferably the lobby machine rather than the wall outside.** If something goes wrong, there is a person, there are keys, and there is a branch manager.

**That is the entire rule,** and it also solves the fee problem, because many bank-owned ATMs either charge less or refund the charge if you take a slip at the counter.

**And a note about the thing nobody tells you:** take your card out *before* you take the cash. The Thai custom has long been cash first, and people standing there fumbling for their card after the machine has dispensed is how cards get left behind, and how a machine decides it is being robbed.

## Skimming, and how it is actually done

**Card capture overlays are the real technique.** A thin plastic sleeve fitted over the card slot and keypad copies everything you enter, and it is invisible unless you are looking for it.

**Look at the card slot and the keypad before you insert anything.** Anything loose, raised, misaligned, or sitting slightly proud of the machine is a reason to walk away and use the one inside the bank.

**Shake the machine,** seriously. A legitimate ATM is bolted down and does not move. A rig with electronics inside has a give to it.

**And cover your PIN.** It is the oldest advice in banking and it is still the one that matters, because the person watching you at an ATM in a crowded place is not going to guess it, and a camera on the keypad will.

**Never let anyone operate the machine for you,** and this is offered constantly and helpfully, particularly to elderly-looking travellers, and it is the setup for a card retention followed by a friendly theft.

## The fees, which are real and add up

**Around two hundred and twenty baht per withdrawal is the common foreign card charge,** plus whatever your own bank adds for the foreign transaction and the cash advance.

**The cheapest way round it is to withdraw at a bank counter inside a branch,** which costs nothing from the Thai bank and takes a queue and a signature. If you are taking a serious amount of cash out, that is the right answer.

**And withdrawing large amounts repeatedly is expensive.** Four withdrawals in a week to avoid fees can cost more than a cash advance fee would have.

## When the money does not arrive

**The classic: the balance is debited, the notes never come out, and there is no receipt.** This is the hardest one to win and the most common.

**Call your bank immediately and open a case,** and the single thing that makes a difference is calling that night rather than the next day. Bank investigations into disputed cash withdrawals have a window, and it is not a long one.

**Photograph the ATM, the machine number and the nearest street sign, and note the time.** A dispute you can locate geographically is a dispute that gets resolved. A dispute described as "an ATM in Thailand" does not.

**Get a receipt where you possibly can,** and note that many Thai standalone ATMs do not print one at all, which is itself a reason to prefer the machines inside banks.

**And take two cards from two different networks.** The single most common disaster in this country is one card, one problem, and no way to get money until a replacement arrives.

## The longer answer

**The number of people who have real trouble in Thailand with money is small,** and almost all of them are using the wrong machine at the wrong time with the wrong card in their pocket.

**Bank branch ATM, business hours, card out first, PIN covered, two cards, phone call the same night.** That is the whole system, and it costs nothing to follow.
