# Bangkok Has a Second River and Almost Nobody Gets on It

- Description: The khlongs are the working back streets of Bangkok, seen from above, at a busker's pace. A single boat route takes you from a market to a temple without a single car.

The express boat from Sathorn to Tha Tien costs a few baht and takes seventy minutes, and for most of them you are looking at the water. That is the point. The other bank of the river is the actual city, the one with [laundry](https://easythailandvisa.com/laundry-in-thailand-laundromat-washing-clothes/) hanging out and shrines wedged between shophouses, and you are seeing it at a speed that lets you look.

There are about forty khlongs still functioning as waterways in Bangkok, and almost nobody uses them, and that is the best recommendation I can give.

## There are two different boats and people constantly confuse them

**The** [**Chao Phraya**](https://easythailandvisa.com/chao-phraya-commuter-boat-bangkok/) **express boat is the orange flag service that runs the length of the river,** and it is a genuine public transport system with its own piers, its own ticketing and its own logic. It is cheap, it is fast for the distance, and it is the single best thing to do in Bangkok if you have ever been annoyed by Bangkok traffic.

**The Saen Saep canal boat is a different company on a different waterway,** running east from the Chao Phraya through a series of connected canals. It is a local service. It is crowded. It is a bus on water and the comparison is exact, right down to the fact that it stops when you wave at it.

**They do not share tickets, piers, or operating hours,** and treating them as one system is how people end up standing on the wrong pier at six in the morning.

## The canal boat, which is the one people should ride

**It runs during daylight hours, and the service is a fixed set of piers with a flat fare for the whole route.** Buy a ticket on board. Do not worry about the exact number of stops until you have ridden it twice, because the piers are all called things like *saphan* and *talat* and *chin* and you will not know which one is yours from the name alone.

**The useful thing about the canal route is what is on both banks.** You pass through the older working parts of the city, and the older working parts have the market, the workshop, the shrine and the washing on the water's edge all at once.

**Stop at Pratunam and you are in Bangkok's fabric district,** where bolts of cloth are stacked four storeys high and the canal is the delivery road. That is a genuinely different country from the one eight kilometres away, and it takes fifteen minutes on a boat.

## Why not everyone does this

**Because it is not a tourist service and was never designed to be pleasant.** It is hot, it is slow when the boat is full, and at peak hours you will be pressed against a local grandmother with a basket of mangoes. That is not a complaint, it is a warning, and it is also the entire appeal to anyone who is tired of being a customer.

**Because the piers are hard to find.** They are often behind a market, down a side street, or marked only by a sign in Thai. Allow twenty minutes of walking to find one, and accept that you will get it wrong the first time.

**And because the hours are short.** These are working day services. If you want a night canal trip, you are looking at a different thing entirely, a chartered [longtail](https://easythailandvisa.com/longtail-boat-island-trip-booking/) at a much higher price that is a tourist product rather than a bus.

## The Chao Phraya express boat

**Runs the length of the river and the flags on the side of the boat tell you the class,** with the orange flag being the standard service and the others being more expensive, more touristy, or restricted.

**It is genuinely useful as transport.** A trip that would be forty five minutes in a taxi, moving not at all, can be about twenty minutes and cost almost nothing.

**But the reason to take it is the view,** because from the middle of the river the skyline, the temples, the cargo boats and the water all sit in one frame, and from a car you get none of it.

**Buy the ticket at the pier, not from the tout on the platform.** The official orange flag ticket is bought at the pier office. Anyone selling you something on the ramp is selling you a different boat at a different price.

## Khlongs beyond the tourist route

**Bangkok's canal network still functions as a road system for a lot of people who live in riverside communities,** and the best walks in the city are the ones along an unremarkable khlong with a market on it and no viewpoint sign anywhere.

**Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the riverside temples are all reachable by boat,** and approaching them from the water is a better first impression than fighting through a car park.

**And there is a very specific hour worth trying: early evening,** when the water goes bronze and the shrines light up along the bank and the express boat is half empty. That is the version of this I would put in a photograph if I could only take one.

## What to bring, which is almost nothing

**Cash in small notes, because the canal boat does not take cards and the ticket windows do not either.**

**A hat and something to cover your shoulders,** which is not about temples, it is about the sun on open water for an hour.

**And low expectations of a smooth ride.** It is water. It moves. If you have ever been seasick, this is a long flat indoor canal and it is usually fine, which is one of the few things anyone can promise you about it.
