- Description: Eleven baht, fifteen minutes, and a view of the city most people pay four hundred baht to see from a rooftop bar. The reason the river is empty of foreigners is that nobody explains it.

There are three kinds of boat on this river and two of them are excellent value. The tourists take the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, which is a red and white flag, costs 40 baht, and stops at every single landmark because it is designed to be understood without reading anything.

Locals take the orange flag. That is the one you want.

## The three boats

**Orange flag, 11 baht.** The commuter boat. It runs the length of the city, from Nonthaburi in the north to Pak Kret in the south, stopping at around fifty piers. It is fast, crowded, cheap, and it does not stop for anyone. This is the one to use.

**Green and yellow flags, 11 to 20 baht.** Short cross-river and outer-city routes, including the trips up to Wat Arun and across to Khlong San. Same system, fewer piers, sometimes two or three flags for a single vessel.

**Red flag with a white stripe, 40 baht.** The tourist boat. It is a genuinely good product and it is the right choice on your first day, when you want to see the main temples without researching a pier map. It goes past Wat Arun, the [Grand Palace](https://easythailandvisa.com/grand-palace-tuk-tuk-tour-scam/) area, Wat Pho, Wat Saket and a few others, and the audio commentary in several languages is worth having once.

## Why the orange flag beats it

**Eleven baht is a third of a single BTS fare, and it takes you places the trains do not go.** The river is a north-south axis through a city whose land transport is a grid of overpasses. The boat goes where the river goes, which means Wat Arun, the old town, Bang Rak, and the Chao Phraya expressway area are all reachable in a way that four changes on the skytrain will not get you to.

**It is not usually crowded, and when it is, it is a fun kind of crowded.** The commuter boats are packed at rush hour with people who are going to work, not tourists. At 08:00 the boat is standing-room only and it is one of the best cheap experiences in the city.

**You cannot see the city from anywhere else at this price.** The temples, the old shophouses, the cargo boats, the newer condos, the expressway all pass you in the order they were built, which is a history lesson you do not have to read.

## How to actually do it

**Pay with a** [**rabbit card**](https://easythailandvisa.com/bangkok-bts-mrt-rabbit-card/) **and you get the 11 baht fare. Pay cash and it is 20.** You can buy a rabbit card at any [7-Eleven](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-7-eleven-convenience-store/) for 100 baht, and it works on the BTS, the MRT, the boats, and the buses. This is the single most useful thing to do in your first hour in this city and it costs less than a coffee.

**Board at Sathorn, which is the main hub.** Almost every route passes through it, there is a proper waiting area, and it is easy to get to by BTS. If you arrive by airport rail, Sathorn is one stop.

**Get off at Tha Chang for the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew.** This is the correct pier and it saves you the walk that people get wrong by getting off at Tha Tien, which is two kilometres south.

**Get off at Tha Wang Lee for Wat Pho and the Memorial Bridge.** Same side of the river as the Grand Palace, so if you are doing both in a day this is where you go.

**Get off at Tha Tien for Wat Saket, the Golden Mount, and the riverside markets.** The piers along here are the ones the tourist boat uses.

## The things that go wrong

**The boat will not stop unless you flag it.** Stand at the edge and wave, visibly, at the pilot. Do not sit down and hope. People miss their pier on the first trip roughly half the time.

**Know which side you are getting off on.** The boat pulls in on the left going southbound and the right going northbound, or something close to that, and it is genuinely confusing for the first two journeys. Look at the pier signs, not at the boat.

**Do not use it during the water level crisis.** Occasionally in the very wet season the river browns out and the boats stop. This is rare and it is announced. Check before you plan a river day in September or October.

**Do not expect it at night.** The commuter service mostly stops in the early evening. The tourist boat runs later. If you are planning a dinner on the river, that is a different booking entirely and you should ask about it in advance.

## One trip I would do first

Board at Sathorn at about 16:30, ride south to Tha Chang, get off, walk up to the Grand Palace, and ride the orange flag back. The light at that hour on the river is the best in the city and the fare is eleven baht each way.

It is the cheapest good decision available to you in Bangkok, and the reason it is not more famous is that it requires you to stand at a pier and read a sign, which is a small thing that filters out most visitors.
