- Description: Doi Inthanon is the highest point in the country, it costs three hundred baht to walk past the waterfall, and the actual reason to go is a trail where you might see something twice in a day.

Thailand's highest point is 2,565 metres and the road to it takes two hours from Chiang Mai and the view from the top, on a good day, is a plain of cloud with a pagoda sticking out of it. That is the destination. Everything worth doing at Doi Inthanon happens before you get there, which is why most day tours get it exactly backwards.

## How national parks work here

**Most Thai national parks charge an entrance fee at the gate, usually between 100 and 300 baht for a foreign adult,** and a few charge again for a specific waterfall or attraction inside. Doi Inthanon's gate fee is **300 baht**.

**You pay cash, you get a sticker, and you keep it.** There is no ticket and no turnstile barrier. The fee is genuinely used for maintenance and enforcement, which is a rare and pleasant thing in a country where most entrance fees are not.

**Park hours are usually daylight only,** typically around 6am to 6pm, which is not a restriction until you realise you were planning to photograph the summit at dawn.

**Recent parks have started using QR codes at the entrance for fee payment,** but cash is still universally accepted and still the path of least resistance. Carry small notes; the fee station often cannot produce change.

## The three things to actually do

**1\. Ang Ka Nature Trail, the Karen village loop.** A two-hour walk through forest and farmland above the village, which is where the real birds and butterflies are. This is the single best walk in the park and almost every tour skips it because it adds two hours.

**2\. The twin waterfalls, Pa Sua and Pa Laem.** Beside the road, free once you are inside the gate, and genuinely beautiful. If you only do one thing on a Doi Inthanon day, do this.

**3\. The summit, and specifically the royal pagoda complex at the top.** King Rama IX's ashes are interred there, which makes it a genuinely significant place rather than just a viewpoint, and it is quiet in a way that tourist sites in Thailand rarely are.

## Why the summit is worth the drive anyway

**The plain of mist is real and it is spectacular.** From October to February, on a morning with the right conditions, you get cloud below you and sun above it, with the ridge line breaking through.

**The road there passes through two waterfalls, two royal projects and a forest that goes from pine to montane evergreen as you climb,** and the temperature drops noticeably. You leave a 35 degree Chiang Mai afternoon and arrive somewhere closer to 20 degrees, and that change is part of the point.

**Go before nine in the morning.** By eleven the cloud has usually burned off and the view is a flat grey plain, and the buses have arrived.

## What to wear, because this is the part people get wrong

**At 2,565 metres this is genuinely cold in the** [**cool season**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-cold-season-november-february/)**.** Not cold like Europe, but cold enough that a t-shirt and a light jacket is a mistake at seven in the morning in December or January.

**It is wet year-round,** and the trails are mud in the wet season. Shoes you do not care about.

**And it is cold at the summit in a way that is not true at the bottom,** so the layer you need goes in your bag rather than on your back.

## Getting there

**A** [**songthaew**](https://easythailandvisa.com/songthaew-local-transport-thailand/) **or a minivan from Chiang Mai goes up from the city.** A shared songthaew leaves from near the old city in the morning and comes back in the afternoon, and the fare is a few hundred baht depending on how full it is. Private charter costs several thousand and is the sensible option for a group.

**A** [**motorbike**](https://easythailandvisa.com/buying-a-motorbike-in-thailand/) **up is the cheap and genuinely good option if you have the licence category and a helmet,** and the road is one of the better ones in the north. It is 40km of corners with a great café at the top.

**Do not attempt it on a** [**scooter**](https://easythailandvisa.com/renting-a-scooter-in-thailand-what-they-dont-tell-you/) **with no motorcycle endorsement on your IDP,** because the road has drop-offs and the licensing trap is covered elsewhere on this site and it is a real one.

Doi Inthanon is a good day. It is not a spectacular one in the way that people expect from "Thailand's highest mountain", because it is not a Himalayan peak, it is a forested limestone ridge with a pagoda on it. The forest, the birds and the cloud are the point, and if you leave the summit early and walk the Karen loop instead you will remember the walk rather than the road.
