Getting to Koh Samui Without Flying, and Why You Might
Twelve hours in a car and a boat, a night in Surat Thani, and the good news is the air-conditioned bus has reclining seats and a working toilet. The bad news is that it is still twelve hours.
Koh Samui has an airport, so the question is why anyone would take eleven hours in a vehicle to reach an island that you can be on in ninety minutes. There are three good reasons, and they are not the ones people usually give.

The three reasons
Baggage. This is the real one. A flight, even a cheap one, in Thailand means checked baggage or a fight over cabin allowance, and the airlines that fly to Samui are small, the aircraft are small, and the cost of a second bag is often 600 to 1,000 baht. A coach takes your whole suitcase, a surfboard, a box of things you bought, and a motorbike you have decided to ship home.
Money. The bus and boat route can be done for 700 to 1,200 baht end to end. The cheapest flight on the same route is rarely under 1,500 and on a Friday can be 3,000.
Motion sickness on flights to short-haul island airports. Samui's approach involves flying over or near the high ground on the approach, and the descent is genuinely more turbulent than most people expect. Plenty of people who enjoy flying everywhere else find this one unpleasant.
The route
Bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani, 9 to 10 hours overnight. From Mo Chit in Bangkok, with a VIP coach overnight for 400 to 800 baht. This is the standard service and it is comfortable, with reclining seats, blankets, a toilet, and a stop for dinner.
Or from the southern provinces. Hat Yai, Phuket, Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat all have buses that feed into the Surat Thani pier. From Phuket the total is about 5 hours, which is the version of this trip that actually makes sense as a choice.
The night in Surat Thani. The coaches arrive in the evening and the last boat to Samui has usually gone. This is a genuine operational fact and it is the reason most people end up spending a night in a city with nothing to see.
The night is not wasted if you plan it. The bus station is close to the market, the night market is one of the better ones in the south, and the city is an hour from the coast if you want to spend it. But it is a night in a transit town and you should know that going in.
Boat from Surat Thani to Koh Samui, 2 to 3.5 hours. Several operators, different classes. The large express boats take about 2 hours and are uncomfortable and cheap. The smaller ones take 3 to 3.5 hours, are far more pleasant, and cost more.
Budget 1,000 to 2,000 baht all in for the bus, the night, and the boat. Add the transfer from the pier to your hotel, which is 200 to 400 baht.
What to book, and when
Book the coach and the boat separately, not as a package, and book the boat for the morning after. Packages are convenient and they frequently include a boat that departs at 06:30, which means the night in Surat Thani is unavoidable and you have paid for a tour of the pier.
The boat can be cancelled and rebooked cheaply in bad weather, and the coach tickets are more fixed. If the forecast is bad, buy the coach for later. In the monsoon season this flexibility is worth real money and real time.
Check which pier. Surat Thani has a main pier downtown and a second pier about 20 km out at Chaiya, and the bus station is near the downtown one. The larger operators leave from the outer pier. This is a genuinely easy mistake to make at 7am with a suitcase.
The Koh Tao and Koh Phangan options
These are the same journey and they are better value for it. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao both connect from Surat Thani, and Koh Tao's pier is 90 minutes from Surat Thani on a good road, so it is bus plus road rather than bus plus boat, and many people find that easier.
Koh Phangan's main pier is reachable by road and the high-speed boat is fast. If you are going to Haad Rin, the road transfer is 2 hours and the express boat is 1.5, and the total is similar to going via the pier.
When to just fly
If you have less than two days of travel time and a light bag. The flight is 1.5 hours door to door and there is a shuttle from the airport to most of the island's beaches for 150 to 500 baht.
If you are going for four nights or more and enjoy arriving somewhere. The bus route is a genuine arrival, and for a week on an island that is part of what you are paying for.
If you are crossing from Malaysia. Penang to Surat Thani is a genuinely long overland journey, and flying from Penang to Samui with a stop is usually faster and often cheaper. The land route is only worth it for a very heavy bag.
One thing to be careful about
Do not book a bus to Surat Thani and a boat for the same afternoon. The coach can be three hours late in traffic, the boat has a fixed departure, and the island's last boat is around 18:00 to 19:00 depending on season. Missing it means a night in Surat Thani that you did not plan and a rebooking fee.
Book the boat for the morning, leave a margin, and treat the night in Surat Thani as a fixed part of the journey rather than an interruption to it. Once you stop trying to compress it, this route is a perfectly reasonable way to get to an island, and about a third of the people who take it say it was the best part.
