- Description: These three islands get grouped together in every list and they are not remotely interchangeable. One is for staying put, one is for the full moon, and one is for diving.

Every island guide in Thailand lumps these three together because they are all in the Gulf and you can technically see each other from a good boat. They are three completely different holidays, and picking the wrong one is the most common booking mistake made in this part of the country.

## The sixty-second version

**Koh Lanta if you want to stay somewhere for a while.** The longest beach on the Andaman side, a proper village rather than a strip of bars, and the only one of the three where staying a week does not feel like a mistake.

[**Koh Phangan**](https://easythailandvisa.com/koh-phangan-island-guide-full-moon-party/) **if you want the full moon party.** Haad Rin, the Haad Rin, and a completely different island if you do not go to Haad Rin, which is a real thing and worth knowing.

[**Koh Tao**](https://easythailandvisa.com/koh-tao-scuba-diving-course/) **if you want to dive.** The best underwater in the Gulf, by a distance, and the reason people come.

## Koh Lanta, for staying put

Long Beach on the west side is the best beach in the Gulf and it is not close, which is why it works. There is a road behind it, a handful of accommodation options, and nothing else. You can walk into Long Beach at 7am and have the good sand to yourself. In Haad Rin you cannot get onto the beach at 7am in high season because there is a queue for the sunbeds.

Lanta also has the other half of the island, which is undeveloped, has a national park with genuinely good [snorkelling](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-snorkelling-visibility-mask/) and hiking, and has almost no visitors outside a couple of dive resorts. The 4to5 is a rough road and the motorbike taxis on it are committed, but the beaches at the southern tip are the emptiest in the Gulf.

The practical point: Lanta is the only one of these islands where I would suggest five nights rather than two. Two nights on Lanta is a day of travel each way.

## Koh Phangan, for the full moon

Be direct about this. **Haad Rin is a party town. It is a genuinely famous one and it is well run by the standards of anywhere.** The full moon parties are enormous, the music is good, the beach is a horseshoe of bars, and nobody is pretending otherwise. If that is what you want, it delivers, and it delivers every month of the year.

What is less well known is that **Haad Rin is only about 30 per cent of the island.** The other side is a different holiday. Thong Nyan is a quiet bay with a long beach and a handful of resorts. Ban Tai is a mix. Chalelak and the southern beaches are essentially untouched. You can get between them in a songthaew or a scooter in forty minutes and the world genuinely is different.

If you go to Phangan and want the party, take a songthaew to Haad Rin, stay there, and leave. If you do not want the party, stay on the east side and you will spend a week in one of the nicer stretches of coast in the Gulf.

## Koh Tao, for diving

Koh Tao has the best diving in Thailand and it is not marginal. The visibility is better than anywhere else in the Gulf, there are several wrecks worth diving, and the marine parks on the north and west coasts are properly protected. The certification rates are fast because there is so much to dive, which means it is a good place to get certified cheaply and a good place to get certified quickly, which are the same thing and not always what you want.

The island is smaller and steeper than Phangan. The beaches are good but scattered, the roads are a genuine problem for anyone on a scooter, and outside the dive centres the island is fairly quiet. The centres are the reason people are there, and there are a lot of them, and they are the sort of business that will get you certified in four days whether you are ready or not.

My advice is to book a course that takes at least five days, learn to equalise properly rather than rushing, and be suspicious of any place that guarantees you a card in three. The Divemaster course is a real qualification and the fast ones are not worth much.

## The cost of getting there is the real decider

These islands are not interchangeable on price, and the difference is mostly the transfer.

**Koh Lanta from** [**Krabi**](https://easythailandvisa.com/krabi-province-guide-andaman-coast/) **or Phuket** is a minivan to Krabi or Ao Nang, then a longtail or a high-speed catamaran. The combined transfer is 400 to 800 baht per person depending on how many legs you do.

**Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from Surat Thani** requires a minivan to the pier, a boat ride of 2 to 3.5 hours, and then for Ko Tao a second transfer to the island's north end. This is a long day, 6 to 8 hours door to door, and the boat tickets are usually bundled.

There is a fast boat from Chumphon to Ko Tao that cuts the total journey significantly, and it is worth paying more for if you are going specifically to dive. Otherwise budget the whole day and bring something to eat.

## How to actually choose

**One week, no diving, no partying:** Koh Lanta. Long Beach, and nowhere to be.

**Two nights, you know what you want:** Koh Phangan, and pick your side deliberately.

**You want to learn to dive, or you already dive:** Koh Tao.

**You are in February and it is raining on the Andaman side:** go to the Gulf. The Gulf is in its dry season from December to April, and the Andaman is the opposite. This single fact settles most of these questions before any other consideration, and it is the one I would use first.
