- Description: A quiet northern half and a party southern tip, connected by a road that takes an hour, and a full moon event that has been under official pressure for a decade.

Somebody sold me a full moon party ticket and then told me, honestly, that they did not know if the party would happen. It was 2019, it was sold out, and the ambiguity was not a joke. Four years later the same ambiguity was still the situation and I had learned to ask about it first.

[Koh Phangan](https://easythailandvisa.com/koh-lanta-vs-phangan-vs-tao/) is two different destinations joined by a road, and the single most useful thing you can do is decide which one you are going to before you book a flight.

## Haad Rin, and what the full moon party is

**Haad Rin is the southern tip, it is where the party is, and the party happens on the full moon nights around the new moon as well.** It has been running for longer than most people have been travelling, it draws an enormous international crowd, and it is a genuine cultural event that predates tourism and was absorbed into tourism rather than invented by it.

**It is a three night street party.** Fire bowls on the beach, sound systems built for the volume, a fire show, and several thousand people in a strip about two hundred metres long. It is enormous, it is intense, and if you go you will not be doing anything else those three nights.

**And its future has been genuinely uncertain for years,** because Thai authorities have periodically attempted to suppress it on noise and public order grounds, and there has been more than one year where the party was cancelled or restricted at short notice.

**So ask before you commit.** A ticket sold in advance is not a guarantee, and the operators who are honest about this are the ones worth using. If your trip depends on the party, check the current situation and have a plan B, because a lot of people fly to Koh Phangan specifically for three nights and arrive to a village.

## The other beaches, which are better

**Everything north of Haad Rin is a completely different island.**

**Ko Pha Ngan has a monthly new moon party instead of a weekly one,** on a beach in the north, and it is a fraction of the size and a different atmosphere entirely. If you want a party and not a crush, this is the one.

**Haad Salad and Mae Haad are the diving end,** with the good reefs, the dive schools, and a bay that is genuinely beautiful rather than convenient.

**Thong Nian is the beach photographs get taken at,** with the three-toed sandpiper that stands in the shallows and is the reason people come, and it is a small beach so it fills.

**And Srithanu, further up, is the one I would send people to,** which is a long beach, a real village, good food, no crowd at all, and a completely different reason to be on the island.

**The road between them takes about an hour and the island is bigger than people expect,** so "one beach" is a decision rather than a default.

## The five island day trip

**The standard excursion goes to Ko Tao, Ko Nangyuan, Ko Wua Talap and Ang Thong,** plus Koh Phangan itself, in one long day with a boat between each.

**It is a good day and it is a busy one,** and the criticism is not really fair: this is a day trip and day trips are busy. The boats are large, the timings are tight, and the [snorkelling](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-snorkelling-visibility-mask/) at the stops is adequate rather than remarkable.

**Ko Tao is the real destination and is a genuine diving island,** so if diving is why you are in the area, skip the day trip and go and stay on Ko Tao instead.

**Ko Nangyuan is the famous sandbar and it is a photo stop,** and it is worth doing once.

## Getting there

**Ferry and speedboat from Surat Thani, which is the main route and takes most of a day,** with a bus and boat combination the common way to do it.

**A catamaran service also runs from Samui,** which is a completely different island twenty minutes away as the crow flies and which is more developed, more expensive and more built up. People do both, and most people pick one.

**And there is a very small airport,** which takes limited flights and is mostly an inconvenience. Almost everybody arrives by sea.

## Practicalities

**Cash, and more of it than you think,** because a lot of the island is small businesses and the north is cash-only in places.

**Scooters,** which everybody rents and which are genuinely useful on this island because it is big and the public transport is thin. The rules on licence, IDP and insurance are in our [scooter](https://easythailandvisa.com/renting-a-scooter-in-thailand-what-they-dont-tell-you/) post and they matter here more than almost anywhere, because the road has blind corners and night-time traffic.

**Sun, and it is equatorial,** so the reef-safe conversation and the shade conversation both apply.

**And a rain coat,** because the wet season arrives and the sea gets rough and a lot of boats stop running, which is the same seasonal pattern as everywhere else in this post.

## My actual advice

**If you want the party, go to Haad Rin and time it deliberately, and check the current status first.**

**If you want an island, stay in the north or on the east coast, book somewhere with a view and a fan, and do nothing for four days.** That is the version people come back from.

**And if you can only do one,** stay on Koh Phangan rather than doing the day trip, because the whole argument for going to a five island excursion is that you saw a lot of [islands](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-islands-nobody-is-talking-about/), and you will have seen a lot of islands.
