- Description: Koh Tao will certify you to eighteen metres in three days for about twelve thousand baht, which is a third of the price anywhere else. The thing to check is the recompression chamber.

Three days, twelve thousand baht, and at the end of it a card that lets you dive to eighteen metres anywhere in the world. The same course in Australia costs four times as much. The instructor has a hundred thousand logged dives, the water is warm and clear, the boat leaves twice a day, and there is no reason at all on the surface for the price to be low.

The reason is on the surface too, if you know what to ask.

## What it actually costs

**Four tracked** [**Koh Tao**](https://easythailandvisa.com/koh-lanta-vs-phangan-vs-tao/) **operators currently publish between 9,800 and 12,950 baht for a PADI Open Water Diver course.** That figure should include the e-learning, the equipment hire, the dive computer, the instructor, the certification fee and insurance.

**Three to four days, four to five dives, and a maximum student-to-instructor ratio of four to one** at the operators that publish it. Six to one is the upper end and is acceptable. Anything beyond that is a group being processed rather than taught.

**Advanced Open Water runs two days and about 9,000 to 11,900 baht,** takes you to thirty metres and includes the dives you are not certified for yet.

**The certification card is valid internationally and does not expire.** It is the cheapest genuine diving qualification available anywhere and it is not a Thailand-specific permit.

## Why the price is what it is

**Koh Tao has been a dive school for about fifty years and there are dozens of them within walking distance of each other.** They compete on price against each other rather than on price against anywhere else, because the customer is already on the island.

**Included gear is the difference.** Tanks, regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins and a computer are 800 baht a day to rent on their own in most countries. On Koh Tao the rental is folded into a course price of twelve thousand baht, and the effective cost of kit is almost zero once you are diving.

**It is a genuine bargain and not a discount.** PADI has been running the e-manual system since 2015, which moved several hours of classroom work online before you arrive. You do the theory on a laptop in your own accommodation and turn up for the pool and the water.

## The one question that matters

**Ask where the nearest recompression chamber is, and ask it before you pay.** This is the whole safety conversation in one question, and a good operator answers it immediately.

**Koh Tao does have access to a hyperbaric recompression chamber on the island**, through membership of the SSS diving medical organisation, and one shop's membership includes it. But "access through a membership arrangement" is not the same as "the chamber is in the car", and the honest answer from any operator should distinguish the two.

**Other** [**islands**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-islands-nobody-is-talking-about/) **do not have this.** On some Koh Tao-adjacent dive areas the realistic answer is roughly two hours by ferry plus an ambulance transfer to a chamber on [Koh Samui](https://easythailandvisa.com/getting-to-koh-samui-without-flying/). Two hours is survivable for most conditions and is not survivable for a few.

**Diving carries an inherent risk that no training removes.** The things that actually kill recreational divers are overwhelmingly barotrauma, arterial gas embolism and shallow-water blackout, and all three are consequences of ascending too fast, holding a breath, or being in water too long. Those are training and discipline problems rather than equipment problems, which is why the instructor-to-student ratio is the second number to ask about after the chamber.

## The rule everybody forgets

**No flying for at least eighteen hours after diving, and twenty-four is the number to plan around.** Flying after diving, and specifically flying after multiple dives, is the single highest-risk thing a new diver does. The gas your body absorbed comes out of solution at altitude, and if there is still nitrogen in your system you are at risk of decompression sickness in the aircraft rather than at the bottom of the sea.

**So if your flight home is in the three days after your last dive, you have a genuine conflict** and it needs solving before you book, not at the airport. Options are to do the course earlier in the trip, or to spend the days after diving on the mainland doing something that is not diving.

## If you are not ready to be certified

**Discover Scuba Diving lets you dive under direct instructor supervision with no certification at all.** It is a single or half-day experience, it is the right first step if you are not sure you want the card, and it is also the right choice if your flight is too close to the end of the trip.

## What to actually check

The ratio, the chamber, and the last flight. Get those three right and Koh Tao is the best value in diving anywhere. Get the first one wrong and the price does not matter, because a course you have forgotten half of by the time you are deep is the most expensive thing you will buy in Thailand.
