- Description: Police report, embassy appointment, one document that takes a fortnight to replace. What actually happens, in the order it happens, with real timings.

My passport went missing on a Tuesday afternoon in Chiang Mai, which is the worst possible day because most consulates close at four and it is already four.

What I had not appreciated is that a lost passport in Thailand is not an emergency in the sense people fear. It is a queue and a stack of paperwork with a fixed cost and a fixed timeline, and the only genuinely serious part is something almost nobody mentions, which is that **you cannot leave the country until you have a document**, so any plan involving flying home in a hurry is gone.

Last verified 30 August 2026.

## Step one: the police, today

**Go to the local police station and file a report, and do it within twenty-four hours.** Most embassies will not issue anything without one, and the timing matters because a report filed three days later looks considerably worse than one filed the same afternoon.

You will be given a written report with a reference number. **Take the physical paper, photograph it, and put the photograph in the cloud immediately.** In the case that cost me the most time, the branch printed it on the spot and the officer held onto the carbon copy for their own records, which meant going back to the same station at their convenience.

Bring the photocopy of the lost passport's data page if you have one, which most people do not. Bring a description: where, when, what bag, whether anything else is missing.

## Step two: the embassy, not the consulate you wish you had

**Contact your own** [**embassy**](https://easythailandvisa.com/how-to-apply-for-a-thai-visa-at-the-embassy/) **or consulate directly and ask for a specific appointment slot, and ask what they require in the same message.** The major embassies in Bangkok usually work by appointment and the process is fast once you have one. The consulates in Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui handle smaller caseloads and have different opening patterns.

**Ask, in writing, three questions:** what documents do you need, what does the replacement cost, and can I get a travel document to leave the country before the full passport is ready. That last question is the one that matters if your trip is ending soon, and it is a question many people do not think to ask until they are already waiting.

## Step three: the document pile

**What consulates consistently ask for:** four passport photographs, recent, white background, taken within the last six months, and usually in a specific size, so have them made locally rather than assuming your travel photos qualify. The original police report. A photocopy of the data page of the lost passport. A photocopy of your visa page and entry stamp. Proof of your address in Thailand. Your national identity card, which is often the document people have not brought and cannot get. Birth certificate in a small number of cases.

**Bring photocopies of everything, twice, because you will be asked for one set to leave and one to keep.**

**And pay in the way they require, which is often cash and often at a named bank rather than at the embassy desk.** This is not a detail anyone warns you about and it is a genuinely common reason a second appointment is needed.

## What the timeline is

**Count on a week to a fortnight for a replacement passport**, and treat anything promised in three days as a best case rather than a plan. Non-urgent timing is outside your control entirely, because production is not happening in the consulate.

**An emergency travel document, where the consulate offers one, is usually same day or next day.** It is generally valid for a single journey, usually back to your own country, and it is not a replacement for a passport you can travel on freely. It gets you home.

## The part that actually catches people out

**You cannot leave Thailand without a valid travel document, and you cannot get a new visa without a passport.** So the plan where you lose the passport three days before a flight is not solvable by spending money at the airport. You are staying.

**You also cannot extend a visa or do a** [**border run**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-border-run-two-land-entries/)**.** Both need a passport. If your visa was about to expire when you lost the document, tell the [immigration office](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-visa-extension-30-day-procedure/) the same day, because an expired visa plus a missing passport is a genuinely worse problem than either one alone.

**The cost is usually modest,** a few hundred baht for the report and a couple of hundred US dollars for the document, and the real cost is the time. Budget a week of doing nothing useful, because that is what it is.

## What stops this happening

**Put a photocopy of the data page, the visa page and the entry stamp in your email, in the cloud, and printed in a bag that is not the bag you lose.** Thirty seconds of work. It does not get the passport back but it makes the embassy appointment half an hour instead of an afternoon.

**Carry your national identity card.** Almost every consulate wants it and almost nobody travelling light has it, because it is a big plastic card that is useless in Thailand except on the one day you need it.

**And do not trust a phone wallet for a** [**border crossing**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-land-border-crossings-laos-cambodia/)**.** An e-passport stored in a phone application is not a document Thai immigration will accept. It is a backup for a hotel check-in, nothing more.
