- Description: I have watched a man lose 8,000 baht in eleven minutes over a photocopy, and I have seen the same argument end in thirty seconds because he said 'photo first'.

The scam does not feel like a scam. That is the whole trick. A man in a polo shirt shows you a [scooter](https://easythailandvisa.com/renting-a-scooter-in-thailand-what-they-dont-tell-you/), checks the brakes, hands you a [helmet](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-helmet-law-motorbike-passengers/), and asks for a photocopy of your passport as a deposit. Everything about the interaction says *this is normal*. It is also the single most reliable way to lose 8,000 baht in Chiang Mai.

I watched it happen to an Australian couple in 2019\. The shop took a photocopy of the passport, the deposit, the bike. Eleven minutes later the "mechanic" found a scratch on the front fender that was not there at handover. The repair quote was 8,000 baht. The shop had a photocopy, a signature, and a witness who was also the mechanic.

Last verified 30 September 2026.

## What the deposit is actually for

**Nothing. It is leverage, and leverage only works if you cannot walk away.** A real deposit protects the shop from a bike that gets stolen. What it actually protects the shop from is a customer who disputes damage later, and the way it does that is by making leaving expensive and slow.

The passport photocopy is the sharp end. Without it you are a stranger who can vanish into the night. With it, the shop knows your full name, your nationality, your passport number, and your home country's embassy. None of that helps you get your money back. It helps them hold you in the shop while other customers form a queue behind you.

You should never hand over a passport or a copy of one as a deposit. Not because the shop is necessarily criminal, but because you have given up the only leverage you had, and the transaction is now one-sided by design.

## The two words

When they ask for the photocopy, say **"photo first."** Then take out your phone and start photographing the bike. That is the entire defence, and it works because it changes the shape of the conversation in about four seconds.

Here is why. The shop's entire profit on a bad bike comes from a dispute about damage that happened before you took it. The moment you start photographing, you have made damage a claimable dispute. Their incentive flips from "find something on it" to "get this person moving before they find something on it." The behaviour of the staff changes immediately, and not because anyone said no to them.

Photograph these six things, every time, before you accept the key:

**The front and rear of the bike with the odometer in frame.** Not the speedo reading alone, which they can argue is wrong. The whole dial.

**Both sides, and the underside of the seat where water damage lives.**

**The front fender, specifically, close enough to see a scuff.** This is the part they will find for you. Find it first.

**Any existing damage, in a wide shot, with something for scale.**

**The fuel level.** Half a tank is normal and free. A full tank is a 200 baht charge you did not agree to.

**Your own face with the bike, in one frame.** This sounds absurd. It is not. It is timestamped proof that you took delivery of a specific machine, and it costs you four seconds.

## The shop rule that actually matters

Do not rent from a shop on the beach or directly outside your hotel. This is not superstition, it is pricing. The shop on the beach pays commission to the hotel and the tour desk that sends guests to it. That commission is why the deposit is 2,000 and not 500, and why the bike is a 2014 automatic with a soft tyre. Walk 500 metres inland and the price falls by a third with the same machine, because the shop is not paying anyone for the privilege of your custom.

In Chiang Mai this is easy to verify in one afternoon. Rent a bike from a [soi](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-addresses-soi-thanon-directions/) three streets back from the beach. Ride it. If it is fine, you have saved a thousand baht and learned nothing. If it is not, you have learned something valuable for the price of one tank of petrol, and you still have your passport.

## When you will still get stopped

None of this stops the roadside police box. That is a separate problem with a separate fix. You need an [international driving permit](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-driving-licence-rental-cars/), carried alongside your home licence, and you need to wear a helmet that is actually fastened. The fine for riding without the permit is 500 baht and the real cost is an hour of your afternoon at a station where nobody speaks your language.

The permit is issued by the automobile association in your own country. In the UK it is the AA, in Australia it is the RACV or the NRMA, in the US most state motor vehicle agencies issue one. It takes an afternoon, it costs very little, and it is the difference between a shrug and a problem. Do it before you fly, not in Chiang Mai.

Also photograph the police box. Not in a confrontational way. Just lift the phone, quietly, when the conversation is going badly. It changes the dynamic more often than you would expect, and it costs you nothing.

## What it should actually cost

For a 110cc automatic in Chiang Mai, a real shop with a real deposit should be somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 baht a day, or roughly 3,500 to 5,000 baht a week. Insurance is either included or genuinely optional. A helmet should be included. If you are being quoted more than 2,000 a day for a small bike, you are at a tourist-counter shop and the deposit is the business model.

If the bike is a big 150cc or larger, the daily rate goes to 1,200 to 1,800 and the deposit should go up with it. What should never happen is a deposit of ten times the daily rate. That number is not a security deposit. That is a hostage situation with a receipt.

Walk. It is almost always the fastest way to resolve a rental dispute in this city, and the shop knows it.
