- Description: Sixteen hundred metres up a winding mountain road in Phetchabun, with a battle from the last century still on the ground and essentially nobody else there.

I got up at four thirty for a sunrise, walked out in the cold expecting nothing, and stood in a car park above a valley that had filled overnight with a sea of white cloud, peaks appearing out of it like islands. There were about forty people in the whole park and eleven of them were standing in that car park.

I have never had an experience like that anywhere and it is two hours from anywhere.

## What it is

**A national park in northern Phetchabun province, on the highland spine that runs down the country,** at around sixteen hundred metres, and it is a plateau of pine forest, grassland and cliff rather than the jungle most visitors associate with Thai parks.

**Which is the first thing that confuses people, and the first thing that makes it unusual,** because the landscape genuinely does not look like Thailand. Cool air, conifers, open grassland, a horizon you can see a very long way to. In winter the mornings are around ten to fifteen degrees and people wear jackets, which almost nobody in Thailand expects.

**And the reason most visitors do not come is not difficulty, it is that they have never heard of it,** because the same effort gets you to a beach with a photograph instead.

## Getting there, which is the actual hurdle

**The road is the thing.** It is a mountain road with a series of hairpins climbing out of the district below, and it is not a road you want to attempt in the dark, in rain, or while tired at the end of a long drive.

**Hire a driver,** and this is the one place in the archive where I will say that without reservation. Locals drive it competently. Visitors on unfamiliar mountain roads at altitude in the dark do not, and the difference in outcome is the whole trip.

**Approach it from Phetchabun province through the Khao Kho district,** or from the northern side out of Phitsanulok province, and both are a couple of hours of driving from the relevant city. It is closer to Chiang Mai and Phitsanulok than to Bangkok by a very long way, and that is the reason it stays empty.

**You need a park permit,** which is the standard Thai national park procedure and is arranged at the park headquarters, and you should go in daylight because that is when it is open.

## When to go

**November to February is the window,** and the dry [cool season](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-cold-season-november-february/) is the only period where the road, the trails and the viewpoints are all comfortably usable.

**November, December, January and February are the good months,** and the sea of mist is most reliable in the first half of that range, in the cool season when cold air settles into the valley overnight and the peaks stay clear above it.

**For the mist, be at a viewpoint between about half past five and half past six in the morning,** and the season matters more than your alarm clock: the phenomenon is a temperature and humidity outcome, not a tourist attraction with a schedule.

**March and April are hot and hazy,** and the agricultural [burning season](https://easythailandvisa.com/chiang-mai-october-burning-season/) affects visibility across the northern highlands and it is genuinely bad in a bad year.

**And the** [**rainy season**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-monsoon-rain-season-guide/) **from June to October is when the waterfalls are at their best,** and it is when the roads and the trails are least reliable. Some of the trails wash out. That is a real consideration, not a theoretical one.

## What is there

**The historical ground, which is the part almost nobody knows about,** is a guerrilla conflict from the second world war and the political upheavals that followed it, and the forested slopes still contain positions, shelters and walkways built into the rock. There is a museum at the visitor centre and the sites are scattered through the forest on marked trails.

**And it should be treated with respect rather than as a photo opportunity,** because people died on those hills, and the park manages the sites accordingly.

**The cliffs and viewpoints,** several of them easy to reach, which is where the mist and the long views are.

**Waterfalls,** which are modest in the dry season and considerably better in the wet, and which is the one real argument for coming in the rain.

**And wildflowers,** including a flowering cherry-like tree that draws visitors in January for a fortnight and produces a genuinely beautiful and extremely crowded few days.

## Where to stay

**There is park accommodation and there is accommodation in the villages below,** and at weekends and on public holidays the park area fills completely.

**Stay the night,** which is essential, because the mist is a five thirty in the morning phenomenon and a day trip from the city means arriving after it has burned off.

**And come on a weekday.** The entire character of this place depends on it not being busy, and two days of it being empty is worth considerably more than one day of it being full.

## Who this is for

**Somebody who wants cold air, a view, silence and a very short walk to all three.** That is the actual description and there is a lot of Thailand that is none of those things.

**It is not a hiking park.** The trails are short and the terrain is a plateau, and if you came for a multi-day trek this is the wrong place and [Chiang Rai](https://easythailandvisa.com/chiang-rai-and-the-golden-triangle-day-trip/) province is the right one.

**And it is a two or three day trip at most,** which is worth saying plainly, because people arrive expecting a week and there is not a week here. There is a weekend and it is exceptional.
