- Description: The airport has got better in almost every measurable way, and the thing that has not changed is that a visitor leaving needs two hours more than one arriving.

Bangkok's main airport is large, efficient, and genuinely pleasant, and it is also responsible for an enormous number of missed flights and unpleasant last hours. Almost all of that is because people have the wrong expectation of how long the departure process takes.

Last verified 15 September 2026.

## The number to plan around

**Be at the airport three hours before an international departure, two hours for a regional flight.** This is not a conservative figure and it is not a Thai quirk. It is what the airport recommends and it accounts for the specific failures that happen here, which are the queue in passport control and the walk from the terminal to the gate.

The reason people get caught out is that **passport control for departures is the slow part and it is the part that is unpredictable.** It can be ten minutes and it can be ninety, with no useful way to tell in advance, and you cannot buy your way past it.

## Arrival, step by step, with real times

**Landing to the immigration hall: 15 to 25 minutes.** This is walking, the walk from the aircraft to passport control is genuinely long in a terminal this size.

**Immigration: 20 to 60 minutes.** If you have filed the [digital arrival card](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-digital-arrival-card-tdac/), this is at the fast end. If you have not, some officers will process you and some will make you stand in a separate queue while you do it, and you should do it on the plane or in the queue rather than at a desk.

**Baggage: 15 to 30 minutes.**

[**Customs**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-customs-duty-free-allowance/)**: 5 to 10 minutes for the green channel, longer for anything to declare.**

**Total from landing to outside the terminal: 60 to 120 minutes.** With checked baggage. Without checked baggage, 40 to 60.

**Then the transport out, which is the part nobody costs properly.**

## Getting into the city, and this is where the evening is lost

The extension of the Airport Rail Link to the city was announced, promised, and for years reported as imminent. It has not happened. There is still no rail link past Phaya Thai, and every plan that assumes a train to the centre of Bangkok is wrong.

**The Airport Rail Link, 45 baht, 30 minutes to Phaya Thai.** This is the right answer for most people, and Phaya Thai is on the [BTS](https://easythailandvisa.com/bangkok-bts-mrt-rabbit-card/) line so you can continue downtown cheaply. It runs every 30 minutes or so rather than every 10, which is the one weakness.

**A metered taxi, 300 to 450 baht, 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.** Take one from the official queue and insist on the meter. The airport surcharge is legitimate and the driver quoting a fare to a hotel rather than using the meter is not.

**A private transfer you booked, 800 to 1,500 baht.** Worth it at 1am with three people and bags, and worth it in the rain. Not worth it at 7pm on a weekday with one backpack.

**A bus, 36 baht.** The Airport bus route to Khao San and the old city exists, it is cheap, and in the evening traffic it is the fastest thing on the road because it uses the expressway. Do not use it with a lot of luggage at 2am.

## Departure, which is the part to plan

**Three hours for international, two for regional.** The sequence is: check in and bag drop, then passport control, then the gate, then the walk. The walk from check-in to the far gates is 15 to 20 minutes and people routinely underestimate it.

**Online check-in opens about 48 hours out** on most airlines. Do it at home on the hotel [wifi](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-internet-wifi-speed/). It saves 20 to 40 minutes at the airport because it gets you past the check-in hall into the security queue earlier.

**Know which terminal you are in.** There is one terminal, and the gate numbers run to around 66 at the far end. A 20-minute walk is not a problem at 08:00 and is a genuine problem at 23:30 with a delay.

## What is actually in the airport

**Genuinely good: the food.** The departure concourses have a better and cheaper range of Thai food than most of the city, because the airport is a tax-free zone and the operators are competitive. The airport rail station and the arrivals level are the two places to eat before leaving the country.

**Genuinely good: the free WiFi** throughout, fast enough for video.

**Genuinely bad: the duty-free pricing on alcohol and tobacco.** You can buy a bottle of whisky in the city for a fraction of the duty-free price. Do not.

**The lounges are expensive** unless your ticket includes one, and several of them have day passes at 2,000 to 3,500 baht, which is not worth it for a few hours.

## Six things that will save you

**File the arrival card on the plane, not in the queue.**

**Photograph your landing strip, the taxi rank or the rail platform, and your hotel door, when you arrive.** Three photographs that take ten seconds and answer any later question about where you were.

**Keep 500 baht in cash for the airport.** The rail ticket is 45 baht and a snack is 80, and the moment you need cash in that building is not one you want to solve at the ATM queue with people leaving the country.

**Do not buy duty-free liquids.** A 100ml rule exists and the security queue at the departures level will hold you for a bottle of water somebody bought inside the airport, and this happens constantly.

**If you have a tight connection, go to the airline counter before you leave the terminal.** If you are going to miss it, they can sometimes put you on a later flight at no cost, and the request is much easier to make in person at departure than at check-in after the fact.

**Set your phone to local time on landing.** Thailand is UTC+7 and you will be tired.
