# Nobody Can Give You a Thai Address Because Thai Addresses Are Not Addresses

- Description: A Thai address is a set of coordinates in a chain of containers, it is written differently on the sign than spoken aloud, and the same house has four names.

You write the address on a piece of paper, hand it to a driver, and he reads it and asks you a question you cannot understand about a number. The number is the one thing you thought was unambiguous.

Thai addresses are not strings. They are paths, and you have to say them in order.

## The chain

**A Thai address is a sequence of nested containers, each smaller than the last, and you read it from the outside in.**

**The road is the outermost one.** A *thanon* is a main road, a *soi* is a smaller road or lane branching off it, and a *moo* is a village subdivision used as a rural address unit. On a sign you will typically see the soi name and number, then the moo, then the house number.

**The house number is a local number, not a postcode.** Number 42 on one soi has nothing to do with number 42 on another, and there is no arithmetic that gets you from a road to a house.

**Which is why you cannot skip a level.** A soi inside a soi is common, and the addresses still work as long as you say which one is inside which, out loud, in that order.

## What makes it genuinely hard

**The same place has several names at once,** because the road was named for a family, the soi is called something else locally, and the building has a name in addition to its number. A hotel might have a name, a brand, a building and a house number, and a driver will need whichever one he recognises.

**And the written form and the spoken form diverge.** A driver will often call a road by the name of the landmark at one end of it rather than the name on the sign, and the sign may be a long way from where you are standing.

**And in a soi long enough to have its own tailors and its own coffee shop,** the [gold shop](https://easythailandvisa.com/buying-gold-in-thailand/) is a landmark in a way that the number is not.

## How to get an address that actually works

**Ask for the nearest landmark, not just the building.** "In front of the [7-Eleven](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-7-eleven-convenience-store/) on the main road" is worth more than a correct building number, because it is the thing a driver can see and verify.

**Get the landmark's name in Thai and write it down.** A photograph of a shopfront with its Thai signage is genuinely more useful than an address, and it is why a lot of people travelling in Thailand do this constantly.

**Send a pin.** Almost everybody uses a map app and almost every local driver uses one too, and a pin beats an address in this country the way it does not in a lot of places.

**And when you are booking something, send all three:** the pin, the landmark photo, and the written address. Any driver can work with one of those. The ones who cannot work are the ones with none of them.

## Why it is worth half an hour of effort

**Because getting dropped on the wrong soi in a hot city at nine at night with a bag is genuinely unpleasant,** and because a driver who cannot find you will not call you, and sitting in a car while a man circles a block is a very specific kind of stress.

**And the same system is why Thai addresses look nonsensical to foreigners,** which is the useful framing: the order is not broken, it is just a different order, and once you say it as a path rather than a string it stops being difficult.
