- Description: It does not let you stay in the country, it does not let you work, and it does not let you vote. It does let you open a bank account, and that is the whole reason to get one.

My Thai [bank account](https://easythailandvisa.com/opening-a-thai-bank-account-non-immigrant-visa/) application went smoothly for eight months and then stopped, because the bank needed a Thai tax number, and a Thai tax number needed a residence certificate, and a residence certificate needed an ID card. None of these is a visa and all of these are consequences of not having one.

The card is on everybody's desk in Thailand and almost nobody can explain it.

## What it is

**A foreigner living in Thailand for a sustained period can apply for an alien registration card,** commonly called the pink card, issued by immigration. The colour varies by region and the design has changed more than once, so do not be thrown by a photo that does not match.

**It is an identity document for a foreign resident.** That is all it is. It exists so that a person who is not a Thai national has something with their name, photograph and registration number on it that a bank, an employer, a landlord or a government office can point at.

## Who can get one

**The threshold is a stay of a sustained period, commonly cited as a hundred and eighty days or more in the country on a long-stay basis.** Tourist entries do not qualify, however long you keep extending your permission to stay, because the basis of the card is residence rather than permitted visit.

**So the practical order is:** get a long-stay visa first, live on it past the threshold, and apply. Somebody on a [DTV](https://easythailandvisa.com/destination-thailand-visa-dtv-explained/), an O-A, an ED or a [work permit](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-work-permit-reserved-jobs/) is in the right position. Somebody on repeated tourist extensions is not.

**You will need your passport, your visa, proof of your current address,** and the standard supporting documents, and you apply through immigration rather than through your employer in most cases.

**Procedures, documents and processing times change,** so check with the [immigration office](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-visa-extension-30-day-procedure/) where you actually live before assembling anything. The rule has been stable for years and the paperwork has not been.

## What it actually does for you

**It is the thing that unblocks ordinary life.** Banks will often open an account for a non-resident with one. Landlords accept it. It is the document a company needs for payroll, for a work permit application, for an apartment lease longer than a month.

**It connects you to a Thai tax number,** which is assigned separately by the revenue authority and is required by a bank if you want to be treated as a resident for banking rather than as a non-resident account holder.

**And it carries a number that other systems refer to you by,** which sounds trivial and is the actual point of an identifier.

## What it does not do, and this is the important list

**It is not a visa and it does not change your immigration status.** Your permission to stay runs from your visa and your entry stamp. The card does not extend it by a day.

**It does not permit work.** A work permit is a separate document issued to an employer, and holding an ID card and working without a permit is a different and more serious problem than having neither.

**It does not give you voting rights,** Thai citizenship, or any political standing of any kind. It is a residence document.

**It does not replace a passport, and it is not a travel document.** You leave the country with your passport or you do not leave.

**And it does not survive you leaving.** If you leave the country for longer than a certain period the registration lapses and you reapply, and there is no grandfathering.

## The order to do things in

**Visa first, residence second, card third, tax number fourth, bank account fifth.** Doing it in any other order means going back and waiting.

**And the order everybody gets wrong is the bank.** A non-resident account opened on a tourist visa works for a while and then stops working for anything involving local payments, because the underlying requirement was never the account, it was the identity documents underneath it.

## What it costs

**A modest government fee, plus the cost of documents you may need to obtain or legalise,** and a morning. It is not an expensive process and it is not a complicated one, and the reason people skip it is that nothing tells you to do it until the first time something breaks.

**What breaks is always the same thing:** a bank, an employer, or a landlord asking for a document you do not have, at a moment when you have no leverage and no time.

## My actual advice

**If you are in Thailand on a long-stay visa and you plan to still be in Thailand in six months,** apply for it now rather than later, because everything downstream of it gets cheaper and faster once it exists.

**And if you are a visitor on a short stay,** do not bother. It is not available to you and no document you produce will substitute for a passport at a border.
