- Description: How the overnight trains actually work in 2026, the booking window that changed in April, what first class really gives you, and which trains have women-only carriages.

The first time I took the sleeper train to Chiang Mai I paid for a second-class lower berth, got a plastic curtain, listened to a man on the phone negotiating a rice delivery until two in the morning, and decided I would never do it again.

Four years later I paid double for a first-class compartment I had to myself, ate a proper dinner, and watched the whole country go by in the dark in silence. Both trips are the same train.

Last verified 8 October 2026\. The State Railway changed its booking window in April 2026, so the rules below are current but you should assume they will change again.

## First, the rule that changed and will bite you

**On 30 April 2026 the State Railway of Thailand cut the advance booking window from** [**180 days**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-tax-residency-180-days/) **to 90 days before departure.** It used to be the single most generous thing in Thai travel planning and it has been halved.

And it is not the same for every train. **Special Express trains — the ones with first-class sleepers — open 90 days ahead. Express and Rapid services open only 30 days ahead.** Sales close two hours before the train leaves.

So: **you cannot now plan a Special Express sleeper for January in August the way you could last year.** Check when your specific train opens, not when trains in general open.

## What first class actually is

Not a better seat. **A locked room with two berths in it that you do not have to share.**

Each first-class carriage is a set of lockable compartments — nine or twelve depending on the carriage — each with two berths, its own [air conditioning](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-hotel-basics-ac-hot-water-wifi/), a private washbasin, and a door that closes. Fresh linen is included: sheets, a blanket, soap and towels, every time, which sounds like a small thing and is not.

There is a toilet and a shower at the end of the car. On the newer Bangkok–Chiang Mai carriages it has hot water; on older stock it is cold, which in Isan in February is a genuine problem.

The berths are upper and lower, and the lower is larger and costs more. On the Special Express between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, expect roughly **1,250 to 1,450 baht for an upper berth** and **around 1,650 for a lower**. If you are [travelling alone](https://easythailandvisa.com/solo-female-travel-in-thailand/) and want the room to yourself, **booking the whole compartment costs roughly 2,450 baht**.

**The train is worth booking early.** First-class compartment cars go fast, particularly Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Bangkok to the southern night trains on the Surat Thani run. **Book the day the window opens, not the week you plan to travel.** A cheap seat on the wrong train is a bad holiday.

## The women-only carriages

You will hear about these, and they are not a gimmick. **Several long-distance trains carry a carriage reserved for female passengers and their children.**

The trains are **1 and 2 to Chiang Mai, 37 and 38 to Surat Thani, 67 and 68 to Ubon Ratchathani, and 69 and 70 to Nong Khai.**

It is a booking rule, not a locked door with a guard. **The carriage is reserved on the ticket**, which means it is enforced at booking rather than at the door, and it is a practical safety feature on an overnight train, not a commentary on who can travel alone. It is also simply a better sleeper for anyone who wants to not be asked to share a compartment with a stranger for eleven hours.

## How to actually book it

**Book on the SRT site directly**, or through a third-party platform. Both work. The SRT has an English toggle in the top right that actually translates, and it takes an international card.

**Have your passport number ready before you start** and type it exactly as printed, because a mismatch is the most common reason a booking fails at the last step.

**Bring a printed copy and a photo of the QR code**. Thai train staff do not universally run [e-ticket](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-train-booking-etickets/) scanners, and being the one person on the platform who cannot show a ticket is a bad start.

And **get to the station early**. Bangkok Hua Lamphong is not a small station, and the trains that people want leave at stupid hours.

## The verdict

**Take the sleeper over a flight if the route is one of the overnight ones and you are not in a hurry.** You wake up somewhere new. That is the entire pitch and it still works.

**Pay for first class if you can.** The jump from a second-class lower berth to a private compartment is the difference between an endurance test and the best night's sleep of the trip, for roughly double a price that is still a fraction of the flight you are replacing.

**And if you are travelling with someone, book the compartment and ask for the connecting door to be opened.** Four people can have two linked rooms and a night that is actually good.

It is a train operated by a railway that has been losing money for decades, and it is one of the best-value things in Thailand. Put the booking window in your calendar the day it opens and do not think about it again.
