The Question at Customs Is Not a Trick and the Answer Is on Your Phone

Two channels, three numbers, and a list of things that get confiscated that nobody warns you about. Customs takes ninety seconds if you know the answer in advance.

Two friends travelling together, seven people, one suitcase. The customs officer opened it, counted nine cartons of cigarettes, and looked up. Custom does not divide by the number of bags. It counts what the person carrying it is in possession of, and the person carrying it was one man.

That is a nine-carton problem and a large fine, and it took eleven seconds to create.

The numbers, which are short

Alcohol: one litre per person, and only for travellers over twenty. One litre, not one bottle. A 750ml bottle is within it. Three bottles is not.

Tobacco: two hundred cigarettes, or two hundred and fifty grams of cigars or smoking tobacco, again for travellers over twenty. One carton, not two.

Personal effects: your clothes and belongings up to a value in the region of twenty thousand baht, and note that the customs department publishes a duty free personal exemption at ten thousand baht, so the two numbers circulate and the safe answer is to stay comfortably under either.

Cash: foreign currency over twenty thousand US dollars must be declared, and undeclared cash can be seized while the origin and purpose are established, which is a process you do not want to be inside.

And your age counts. Under twenty, the alcohol and tobacco allowances simply do not apply to you, which is the fastest way for a teenager to have a bag searched.

Green and red

Green channel is nothing to declare. Red channel is goods to declare, and the red channel involves a form, an inspection, and possibly duty.

Walking the green channel with something over the limit is not clever, it is a fine, and for tobacco in particular the penalties are assessed per pack and are severe enough to end a holiday.

People are inspected on the green channel and it is not a targeted search, it is random, which is exactly why you should not treat the green channel as something to bluff.

What people get stopped for

Medicines, by a very wide margin. Anything scheduled, anything narcotic, anything with a codeine content, anything a doctor prescribed and you have not got the documentation for.

Keep prescription medicines in their original packaging, carry a copy of the prescription or a letter from your doctor, and carry enough for the trip and not a month. A genuinely common problem is carrying a large personal supply, which is a different category from carrying what you need.

Electronic cigarettes, vapes and hookahs, which are prohibited outright and are confiscated with fines possible. This one surprises people because owning a vape at home is now normal in a lot of countries.

Fresh food, plants, seeds, and animal products, which is a biosecurity rule rather than a revenue rule and is enforced regardless of quantity. Fruit, meat, and homemade dog food are all things people carry without thinking.

Coming out, which people forget entirely

The rules on the way out are as real as the rules on the way in, and everybody thinks about arrival.

You can take a limited amount of cash out. The commonly cited figures are around five hundred thousand baht leaving at a land border and around fifty thousand baht departing by air, and these are the numbers to check before your last day rather than at the airport counter.

Export restrictions apply to Buddha images, to antiques and cultural objects, and to shells, coral and marine material. This is a protection law rather than a customs tariff, and the penalties are not a fine.

If you want to bring home serialised valuables you should have owned abroad, such as a camera or a laptop, register them with customs before you leave so you can bring them back in. It is a two-minute form at departure and it is free.

The advice that is actually useful

Keep your customs answers in your phone, in a note, because the officer is not going to wait while you search through a photos app.

Do not carry for other people, and this is the one that ends trips. A friend asks you to carry a carton. The customs arithmetic does not care whose friends you are.

And if you are over on anything, go to the red channel. It is slower and it is correct, and the whole point of the red channel existing is that it is a normal thing to do.
