- Description: The cheapest legal long-term stay in Thailand needs a real school, real attendance and a real curriculum, and immigration actually checks. Here is what has to be true.

The school offered to handle everything. Enrollment letter, visa support, airport pickup, and a schedule that turned out to consist of one conversation a week with a man who was also the receptionist.

That arrangement still exists. It is the single most common visa fraud in Thailand.

Last verified 1 August 2026.

## What the visa is

**The Non-Immigrant ED, usually called the education or student visa,** is the long-term stay route for people studying in Thailand full time. It is issued for ninety days on entry and extended in ninety day increments, ordinarily up to a year at a time while you stay enrolled.

**It is widely used and widely misunderstood,** because for a couple of decades the dominant use was a thin wrapper around long-term tourism, and the authorities have spent that entire period tightening it.

**And it requires a 90 day address report like any other non-immigrant visa,** which we have written about in full separately.

## The one rule that decides everything

**Your school and your course have to be recognised by the Thai Ministry of Education.** Not accredited by an international body, not recognised in your home country, recognised by the Thai Ministry of Education.

**So the first question to ask any school is not about price.** Ask for their Ministry of Education registration number, before you pay anything, and check it. A school that will not give you a number is telling you the answer, and they are telling you quickly which is to their credit.

**Unregistered schools cannot support a legitimate education visa,** and enrolling at one puts you in a category that immigration treats as fraud rather than as an administrative mistake.

## What you are actually signing up for

**A real course, on a real schedule, with real hours.** For language schools the commonly cited minimum is around four to six classroom hours a week, and the enrollment letter should specify the course name, the start and end dates, and the weekly hours.

**Attendance is monitored and reported.** Requirements vary by programme and by school, with around eighty percent a common threshold, and the school is obliged to report non-attendance, and your extension depends on it.

**Which means the thing that makes an education visa attractive, which is flexibility, is exactly what threatens it.** If you are travelling around Southeast Asia on a student visa, you are relying on nobody noticing, and that is a bad bet with a documented downside.

## The paperwork

**A valid passport with at least six months left and blank pages, a completed application, a recent photograph,** and an acceptance letter from the institution on its letterhead naming the course, the dates and the hours.

**Proof that you have paid the course fees, which is the part people miss and the part the letter is meaningless without.**

**And a copy of the institution's Ministry of Education licence,** which a legitimate school supplies as a matter of course. If yours does not have one to supply, you have your answer.

**You apply at a Thai** [**embassy**](https://easythailandvisa.com/how-to-apply-for-a-thai-visa-at-the-embassy/) **or consulate, or online through the** [**eVisa**](https://easythailandvisa.com/visa-on-arrival-vs-evisa-thailand/) **system,** and the fee is on the order of a couple of thousand baht for a single entry, with a higher fee for multiple entry. Processing is a matter of days to a couple of weeks depending on the post.

**And if you are already in Thailand on a tourist entry,** applying in person is not an option. You leave the country, apply at a Thai mission, and come back in. Several schools run the paperwork for you as part of the fee, which is normal and fine, as long as the school is real.

## The DTV changes the calculation

**Since the** [**Destination Thailand Visa**](https://easythailandvisa.com/destination-thailand-visa-dtv-explained/) **arrived, the old arithmetic is wrong for a lot of people.** If you can meet the DTV financial requirement, it is usually a better fit than an education visa for anyone whose actual interest is martial arts, cooking, or a wellness stay, because it does not require a school at all.

**Which is a good reason to think honestly about which one you actually want.** The education visa is a genuinely good route if you are genuinely studying. It is an expensive loophole if you are not, and the loophole is closing.

## Working, which you cannot do

**An education visa does not permit work,** in any form, and this is stated plainly in every set of documentation on this visa.

**Teaching English is the classic example of something that feels adjacent and is not permitted without a proper** [**work permit**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-work-permit-reserved-jobs/)**,** and doing it anyway is a real and enforced problem rather than a theoretical one.

## How to check a school, in five questions

**What is your Ministry of Education registration number? Who is the named teacher and what is their qualification? How many classroom hours a week? Show me a full week of somebody else's timetable. And who does the visa paperwork, and is that included in the fee?**

**Sit in on a lesson before you pay.** Every established school will agree to this and the one that declines is telling you what it is.

**And be suspicious of a school that exists mainly to issue visas,** because that is a business model, not an education, and it is the exact thing that immigration has been targeting.
