- Description: There is a sequence that works and it is not the one people follow, and the first two hours are the only time a single decision saves you a hundred dollars.

Almost everybody lands, goes to the hotel, sleeps for six hours, and starts the trip the following morning in a city they have never seen with no local SIM and no idea where anything is. Three days are gone and they have visited a room.

It does not have to go like that. Here is the sequence that works.

## The first two hours decide the money

**On the plane, before you land, buy or arrange the local SIM.** Airport prices are higher and the counter queue is the longest thing you will do all day, and a working phone is the thing that turns the next two hours from a problem into a task.

**Then get cash before you leave the terminal, at a bank counter or an official exchange rather than the first exchange booth you see,** and get more than you think you need for the first three days because everything works better when you are not counting notes.

**And photograph the taxi or ride-hailing receipt, the** [**ATM**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-atm-fees-explained/) **location, and the first day's transport.** None of this matters until one of these goes wrong, at which point it matters enormously.

## The arrival itself

**Immigration is the queue and the queue is the thing.** Have your documents out before you reach the counter, because the person behind you is in the same queue.

[**Customs**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-customs-duty-free-allowance/) **is two channels and you have written the allowances,** and walking the green channel with something over the line is a fine and not a gamble.

**And the** [**arrival card**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-digital-arrival-card-tdac/) **question set is short and predictable,** and the answers that cause problems are the ones people improvise. Answer plainly, answer consistently with your accommodation, and do not volunteer anything.

## Getting from the airport, which is where people lose money

**Know the legitimate options before you are in the arrivals hall,** because the people offering help with your luggage are not volunteers.

**The airport rail link and the airport bus are both real, both cheap, and both run on a schedule you can look up on your phone in the taxi,** and the rail link is the answer for almost everybody in Bangkok unless you have four people and six bags.

**A booked ride-hailing car is the answer for a family, for late arrivals, and for the island airports where the public transport is a** [**songthaew**](https://easythailandvisa.com/songthaew-local-transport-thailand/)**.**

**And the single rule: decide the transport before you pick up the phone to a stranger offering to help,** because after the phone conversation you are negotiating and you are tired.

## Day one should be boring on purpose

**Do not build a day of sightseeing on the day you land.** The heat, the jet lag and the unfamiliar scale will make you resent it, and this is the most common way a good trip starts badly.

**What to do on day one:** a bank or ATM, a real meal somewhere local and cheap, a walk around your own neighbourhood, and finding the two things you will need at two in the morning.

**Which is the part people skip and which is the part that matters,** because the difference between knowing where the nearest pharmacy, the nearest laundry and the nearest night market are is the difference between a good night and a bad one.

## Day two is for the transport mistake

**Nearly every first-time mistake in this country is a transport mistake** and nearly all of them happen on day two when people are tired and confident.

**So day two is the day to get the airport rail line or the bus terminal figured out, to set up the ride-hailing app, to establish how you will actually move around, and to buy a local SIM backup if you only have one network.**

**Not the sights. The logistics.** The sights will still be there and the logistics are the thing that determines whether you enjoy them.

## What to deliberately not do yet

**Do not buy a motorbike on day two, do not sign a long lease on day three, and do not commit to a long-stay visa route before you have been somewhere else in the country and come back.**

**All three are decisions that feel urgent on day two and feel obviously correct on day thirty,** and the cost of getting them wrong is much higher than the cost of waiting a week.

**Which is the whole thesis of the first three days:** settle the infrastructure, not the itinerary. Everything interesting is still available on day four, and a good setup makes the rest of the trip easy.
