- Description: A Thai haircut costs 30 to 60 baht, takes eight minutes, and the person doing it trained for years to do something tourists ask for constantly and almost always get wrong.

You sit down, you point at your own hair and make a vague gesture, and a barber of twenty-five years' experience asks you six questions. The second one he asks is whether you want the back shorter than the top, and the third is whether you want the sideburns. You did not know the sideburns were a decision.

## What it costs

**30 to 60 baht in a local shop. 100 to 200 in a hotel. Several hundred in a hotel spa or a salon in a tourist district.**

**A shampoo and blow-dry is separate, and often better value than the haircut,** because it is 20 to 40 baht and it is genuinely a different experience from what you can get at home.

**The price is not correlated with the quality at all,** and this is the part visitors get wrong. The most expensive salon in a tourist area will give you a worse haircut than a 40 baht shop, because they are optimising for tourists who will not come back and the local shop is optimising for a person who will come back every three weeks.

## What you are actually booking

**A full head shave with a razor, done by hand, by somebody doing it several times a day.** Thai barbers are genuinely fast — eight to fifteen minutes — and a shave is part of the standard service, not an extra.

**The foot** [**massage**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-massage-what-to-ask-for/) **comes with it,** and this is not an upsell. It is the standard package and a Thai shop that does not offer it is unusual. It runs about ten minutes and it is a strong ten minutes.

**And the level of skill is genuinely high.** A Thai barber will cut a precise line around the ear, will do a proper neckline, and will finish the sideburns and the back properly. In many countries the equivalent of this costs several times as much.

## How to ask, which is the actual difficulty

**Do not say "just a little shorter" and do not describe the haircut you had at home.** A Thai barber will translate that into what he normally does, and what he normally does is a shape he considers correct, which may not be the shape you had.

**The words that help are specific:**

**"Sam"** is three. **"song"** is two. **"nam"** is one. Counting is the fastest way to be understood and it is understood instantly.

**"Phet" is short, "roi" is long, and "mai phet" is not very short.**

**For the sides, the useful distinction is whether you want them faded or squared.** "Fade" is understood; the Thai equivalent is more of a scissor-over-comb result. Say which.

**And the question nobody asks: do you want the back longer than the front, or the same.** This is the most common thing that goes wrong, because a Thai barber's default is a shape with a shorter back and a longer front, and if that is not what you want you need to say so before it starts.

## What not to do

**Do not ask for a specific celebrity's haircut.** It has been asked in every shop in Thailand and it does not work, because the reference is meaningless to the person holding the scissors and they will produce something arbitrary and then it is too late.

**Do not let anybody talk you into a second product** at the end. Hair tonic, gel, scalp treatment, the works. It is not dangerous but it is unnecessary and it is priced as though it were necessary.

**And do not cut it at home with a shop razor the next morning.** The barber cut it to a shape; you do not know which line is which, and a two-baht razor on somebody else's work is how a good haircut becomes an argument with a mirror.

## Haircuts for longer stays

**Every three weeks is the rhythm in Thailand,** and this is worth saying plainly because a visitor plans one holiday haircut and then spends three months with a haircut that has no plan.

**A regular shop will know you,** and will keep the same line. The value of a local shop over a tourist one grows the longer you stay, not less, because consistency is what you are buying.

**Wash your hair the night before, not the morning of,** if you can. It changes nothing about the haircut and it does change the experience of a shave.

A good Thai haircut is 40 baht, takes ten minutes, comes with a hot towel and a foot massage, and is run by somebody considerably better at it than the equivalent back home. The only genuinely difficult part is that the language for what you want is not the language for a haircut back home, and the fix is to learn about twenty words and to count out the scissors.
