- Description: The famous ones are crowded, the remote ones are a day of driving, and the one you want depends entirely on whether you want a hike or a swim.

Most people in Thailand for two weeks are going to visit four national parks, do each one in a rushed half day, and tell people at home that Thai nature is incredible. It is incredible and they did not see it, because the parks are not the same kind of place and doing four is the wrong number.

Do one. Here is how to pick it.

## The three kinds, and they are not interchangeable

**Marine parks** are about the water: the Andaman [islands](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-islands-nobody-is-talking-about/) and the Gulf island national parks, and the deciding factors are the season and the swell rather than anything on land.

**Forest parks** are rivers, waterfalls and limestone, and the best of them are spectacular and the rest are pleasant parkland, and telling them apart in advance is the single most useful thing you can research.

**Mountain parks** are altitude, cold mornings, pine forest and views, and they are completely different again and the only ones where you need a real reason to go.

**Which means the first question is which of the three you actually want,** because choosing a mountain park because you read a photograph of a waterfall is how people end up cold and disappointed in December.

## When

**November to February is the good window almost everywhere in the country,** and it is the only window that works for highland parks, where the entire point is a [cool season](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-cold-season-november-february/) and a sea of mist in the early morning.

**The** [**monsoon**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-monsoon-rain-season-guide/)**, roughly June to October, closes things.** Waterfalls are at their best and trails are at their worst, roads wash out, and some parks have limited access, which is fine if you planned for it and a disaster if you did not.

**And the shoulder months are the best compromise,** because the crowds thin before the heat arrives, which is why a park in late October or early February is a different experience from the same park in mid-January.

## What a day in a park actually costs you

**Transport is the whole calculation and everybody forgets it.** A famous park in the north can be a full day of transport each way, which turns a two-day trip into a four-day trip.

**Which is why the underrated park on the same road as a famous one is frequently the better decision,** and it is why a base with a car beats a base without one for this entire subject.

**And a** [**scooter**](https://easythailandvisa.com/renting-a-scooter-in-thailand-what-they-dont-tell-you/) **solves the accessible ones,** with the usual and non-negotiable caveats about licence, insurance and helmets that we have written about at length. The caveat is stronger the further you go into the mountains, and the roads are the reason for the caveat.

## Picking, honestly

**Pick a marine park if you want to swim or dive,** and check the season first, because a national park that is closed in May is not a backup plan, it is not open at all.

**Pick a forest park if you want to swim in a river and look at limestone,** and pick the one whose access is a paved road rather than a boat, because the boat transfer is half the day and the experience is the same.

**Pick a mountain park if you want to be cold,** and go in the cool season, and accept that a mountain park in May is a different and much worse experience than the photographs suggest.

**And pick the famous one if you only have two days,** because the famous one is famous for a reason and the crowd is a symptom of quality rather than a substitute for it.

## What parks are not

**They are not day trips,** and the ones that are marketed as day trips are delivering you to a viewpoint in exchange for four hours of your life.

**They are not signposted the way national parks are in most countries,** and the trail markers are paint, and in the wet season some of the paint is underwater.

**And they are not free to enter,** and the entry fee is small, and the reason people resent paying it is that it buys access to a place that would otherwise not be defended from people like you, which is a fair argument about a lot of things in this country.

**Take one. Take two. Take three across a three month trip and it is a country.** Take four on a two week holiday and it is a bus tour.
