- Description: There are three scenes in Thailand and they are nothing like each other. One of them is loud, chaotic, and staffed entirely by women who will stop you making a mistake.

The bar was deafening, the floor was sticky, the drink was twenty baht more than advertised, and four separate people stopped my friend from doing something stupid in the space of ninety minutes without any of them being paid to.

That is the thing nobody tells you about Thai nightlife, and it is the reason I have stopped warning people about it.

## There are three scenes and they have nothing in common

**A beer bar, which is the genuinely Thai one.** Low lighting, cold beer, a table, loud enough to talk without raising your voice, and a team on the floor whose entire job is to keep the room running. This is where most Thais actually go.

**A go-go bar, which is a different country.** Loud, bright, table service, a stage, and a set of rules that are posted, enforced, and taken very seriously. Nobody who works there is a random passerby, and the staff will physically stop you doing things that would get you thrown out.

**A club or a beach party, which is the international scene** and behaves much like the equivalent anywhere, with worse soundproofing and a much better atmosphere if you go on a Wednesday.

**Choose deliberately.** People book a week in Thailand, go to a beer bar on the first night, and then conclude the entire country parties in a way it does not.

## What it actually costs

**Beer bars charge a table or a minimum, not a door,** and the number is a few hundred baht, not a few thousand. The rate is board somewhere and drink at your own pace, which is a model that almost died in Thailand and has come back in a lot of districts.

**Go-go bars usually have a door charge,** and it varies by night, by city, and by venue, and it is often higher at weekends. Ask at the door. Nobody minds you asking and the posted number is not always the real one.

**Drinks are priced by what you are drinking,** and the house spirits are cheap, the imported ones are not. In a go-go bar, the price list is on the wall or a girl will bring it, and it is better to see it before you order than after.

**And remember what the** [**alcohol**](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-alcohol-rules-monks-and-the-muslim-south/) **rules say,** because they apply here in a way that surprises people. Shops do not sell before 11am or after midnight, and on the five major Buddhist days the only venues permitted to serve are hotels, licensed entertainment venues, airports and approved event spaces.

## The rules, which are not negotiable

**No touching.** Not the staff, not the performers, not anybody. This is absolute, it is enforced by the venue rather than by the woman you are ignoring, and a place that tolerates it is a place you should leave.

**Photography of staff is restricted and in a lot of venues banned,** so put the phone away. In a go-go bar it is often a written house rule and the reason is the same as everywhere else: she did not agree.

**Never touch a dancer while she is working.** This is the mistake that ruins a night, and the staff will stop you, and the stopping is not subtle.

**Do not leave drinks unattended,** and do not accept a drink from somebody you have just met, and do not put your bag down. Those three rules cover the majority of what goes wrong in a Thai bar, and they are exactly the same three rules that apply anywhere.

**And do not accept the taxi touts on the street outside.** Get a Grab, or ask the venue to call a metered taxi, or walk to the main road. The touts are not dangerous, they are just taking a commission and you are paying for it.

## Which city, honestly

**Chiang Mai on a Sunday is the best night out in Thailand and it is not close.** A street market that turns into a bar, live music, no alcohol being sold in shops at 2am because everything is in one place, and a closing time that is late but not absurd.

**Bangkok is the volume.** Every scene, every price point, every level of sleaziness available on offer, and an enormous amount of it is good. The river bars are a genuinely different answer to the city and they are much better than most people find them.

[**Hua Hin**](https://easythailandvisa.com/hua-hin-thailand-is-it-worth-the-train/) **and** [**Phuket**](https://easythailandvisa.com/phuket-old-town-or-patong/) **are the same scene with a different price,** and the difference in atmosphere between them and Bangkok is enormous. Neither is bad. Both are more approachable.

**And** [**Koh Samui**](https://easythailandvisa.com/getting-to-koh-samui-without-flying/) **and Ko Pha Ngan are nightlife destinations in their own right,** with the same rules, the same enforcement and the same strict no-touching policy, because it is national and not a local variation.

## Why it is safer than it looks

**Because the staff are protecting the venue, and a venue that lets one customer make one woman uncomfortable loses its licence.** The enforcement is not politeness. It is the business model.

**Which means the people best placed to protect you are the people whose income depends on the room being fine,** and that is a much stronger incentive than any advice I could give you.

**Go, have a bad night, and let the room handle the parts you are bad at.** That is what the noise is for.
