- Description: Some of it is organised crime and some of it is two people who ended up in a bad situation, and the advice that prevents most of it is uncomfortable and simple.

He had been sending money for seven months. She was real, the relationship was real, and the mechanism was so ordinary it hardly counted as a crime: a phone bill, then a school fee, then a hospital, and each one smaller and more reasonable than it should have been.

There was no villain in that story. There was a series of small decisions made by a frightened man to a series of small emergencies manufactured by an operation with a desk and a headset.

## Start with the honest part

**Not every Thai woman a foreigner meets is running a scam,** and the posts that treat the whole country as a con produce just as much damage as the posts that ignore it. Plenty of relationships between Thai and foreign people are entirely genuine and are none of anybody's business.

**But there is a documented and sophisticated international criminal industry operating inside this country,** it targets foreigners specifically, and being told that a group exists is not the same as saying most members of the group are involved in it.

**Which is precisely why the advice below is about patterns rather than about people.** You cannot tell by looking. You can tell by a sequence.

## The pattern, which is consistent

**The first request is always small and it is always reasonable,** phone credit, a taxi fare, help with rent. A person who refuses a small request would not get the large one, so the small request is a filter, not a favour.

**Then they escalate, and the urgency increases each time,** and every new crisis arrives more emotionally expensive than the last one.

**And the meetings stop happening for reasons that conveniently cost money to fix,** a visa, a flight, a family problem, a health certificate. The trip is booked and then something always comes up.

**The early intimacy is the weapon,** and this is the part worth understanding rather than just warning about. Scammers running multiple victims compress the emotional timeline deliberately, because emotional commitment is the asset being monetised. Real relationships can move slowly and survive the slowness.

## The specific tells

**A refusal or awkwardness around live video is a hard signal,** and the excuses given for it, a broken camera, bad signal, a shift, are the same excuses every time.

**Run a reverse image search on the photos.** A stolen or model photograph is the single most easily checked thing on this list and the check takes ninety seconds.

**A social profile created weeks ago with no tagged photographs and no interaction,** a profession that makes meeting impossible, an urgent emigration story, a military posting in a remote place.

**Contradictions in basic biography,** which an organised operation produces by accident because one person is talking to four people and losing track.

**And new characters who also need money.** The brother, the uncle, the mother, the cousin. In a structured operation they are the same person at the next desk, and the introduction is a signal that you have been classified as a reliable payer.

## The one that is specific to Thailand

**Sin sod.** In a marriage between a Thai woman and a foreign man, it is traditional and it is close to universal for a bride's family to receive a sum from the groom, and there is a long documented negotiation about the amount.

**It is a real cultural practice, not a scam, and it is discussed openly in families rather than extracted by guile.** The distinction that matters is transparency versus manipulation.

**A family that tells you what is expected and why is being honest about a real practice.** A partner who invents a sin sod requirement that did not exist last week, or who invents a family member to demand one, is running a script.

**And the same test applies to jewellery, land, vehicles and shop assets,** which is a documented route because these are things that can be sold, and a person being asked to take out a title in their own name in the first months of a relationship is being set up.

## Where the bar setting fits, and where it does not

**Meeting somebody in a bar in** [**Pattaya**](https://easythailandvisa.com/pattaya-honestly-is-it-worth-it/)**,** [**Phuket**](https://easythailandvisa.com/phuket-old-town-or-patong/) **or Bangkok is not proof of anything in either direction,** and I would not pretend otherwise. It is a high-variance environment and the variance runs both ways.

**What the bar setting does is compress the timeline,** which is the one variable that matters in this entire post. A month of talking in person tells you very little about how somebody lives in the other eleven months, and it is the other eleven months where the requests arrive.

**And many Thai women in those venues are supporting families in** [**Isan**](https://easythailandvisa.com/isan-northeastern-thailand-the-region-nobody-visits/)**,** which is a real economic reality and which does not make them a scammer, and which does mean a request from a stranger in a bar deserves more scrutiny than the same request from somebody with two years of ordinary contact behind it.

## If it is already happening

**Stop paying today, not after the next request.** The response to a pause is diagnostic: tears, [anger](https://easythailandvisa.com/thai-anger-and-face-how-not-to-offend/), a new crisis, a deadline. That reaction is the evidence.

**Do not announce that you know,** because confronting them achieves nothing and destroys the record.

**Preserve everything with dates,** chat logs, transfer receipts, account names, profile links, every screenshot.

**Tell your bank immediately,** because cross-border transfer recovery is a race and every day costs you.

**And report it in two places: to the platform, and to the police.** For an incident in Thailand the Tourist Police number we have written about is the right first call, and in Bangkok the anti-online scam centre handles this category. Your home country has an equivalent and a report there is usually a precondition for any claim.

**And expect a recovery scam.** Somebody will contact you offering to get the money back for a fee. It is the same industry, the second time.

## The rule that works

**Never send money to somebody you have not met, and do not let the meeting become urgent when it is inconvenient to you.**

**Which is not cold, it is a sequence.** Meet, verify, spend months in ordinary contact, and then money is a normal thing between two people who have a life together. Invert it and money becomes the entire relationship, because it is the only thing you are actually contributing.
