Every cost article on Thailand quotes the same four numbers: a guesthouse room for 800 baht, food for 200, a scooter for 3,000, and a pad Thai for 40\. None of those numbers come from anyone who has paid rent in Chiang Mai for more than a month.

So here is a month I actually spent, and then three cities compared, and then the parts where the internet is wrong about both cheaper and more expensive than it is.

Last verified 29 September 2026\. Prices in baht, at roughly 36 baht to the dollar.

## The month, in Chiang Mai

| Item | Monthly (baht) | Notes |
| ----------------------------- | -------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| Rent, outside centre | 7,000 | One room, month, no aircon in Nov–Feb |
| Electricity | 700 | Aircon is the entire bill |
| Water | 150 | Negligible |
| SIM | 299 | 8GB, renews monthly |
| Food | 8,500 | Eating local, not touring |
| Transport | 1,200 | Songthaew, red sawng sew on short trips |
| Laundry, coffee, small things | 1,500 | |
| **Total** | **19,349** | About $540 |

That is a comfortable month with money left over, not a survival month. If you eat at the same level every day and take a couple of long trips, push it to 30,000.

## Where the internet is wrong

### It is wrong about rent being 3,000 baht

3,000 a month is a real price for a room in a city like Chiang Mai, but it is a room in a building with a hundred other rooms, no window you would open, and a landlord who owns forty of them. If you are staying three months, the price you get is between 5,000 outside the old city and 9,000 inside it. Inside the old city you get character and mosquitoes. Outside it you get a window and a 15-minute walk to everything.

Monthly rentals do not include electricity, and sometimes not water. Read the listing again before you sign.

### It is wrong about Bangkok being 10,000 a month

Bangkok is more expensive than the old guides say, not less. A one-bedroom in a decent area, monthly, is 18,000 to 25,000 depending on whether you want a condo with a gym or a shophouse above a noise source. A hotel room by the month is worse value than an apartment for any stay over three weeks.

Add roughly 700 a month for aircon electricity, which in Bangkok is genuinely expensive, plus transport at 400–600 unless you live near an MRT station.

A realistic comfortable Bangkok month: **35,000 to 42,000 baht**, about $1,000.

### It is wrong about the islands being free

Not the islands exactly — the real cost is getting there. A speedboat day from [Krabi](https://easythailandvisa.com/krabi-province-guide-andaman-coast/) or Phuket is 1,200 to 2,500 baht. A longtail is 300 to 700\. The island itself has no rent, so the accommodation question resolves itself immediately, and then the next cost is the one nobody budgets: the food on the island costs 30 to 50 percent more than the mainland, because everything came over on a boat.

## Three cities, one month each

| | Chiang Mai | Bangkok | Phuket |
| ---------- | ---------- | ---------- | ---------- |
| Room | 7,000 | 20,000 | 14,000 |
| Food | 8,500 | 11,000 | 12,000 |
| Transport | 1,200 | 3,000 | 2,500 |
| Utilities | 850 | 1,800 | 1,400 |
| Other | 2,000 | 3,000 | 3,000 |
| **Total** | **19,550** | **38,800** | **32,900** |
| US dollars | \~$543 | \~$1,078 | \~$914 |

Phuket in December is roughly double these numbers. Every other month, it is a quiet, rainy, very cheap place to be, which nobody writes about because it does not photograph well.

## The costs nobody lists

**The visa.** Free for 60 of the countries I cover, but 145 need an eVisa, roughly 40 US dollars. Over five years on the [Destination Thailand Visa](https://easythailandvisa.com/destination-thailand-visa-dtv-explained/) it is 10,000 baht plus the paperwork.

**Health insurance.** Not optional once you are on a long-stay visa, and the policies that satisfy the requirement start around 30,000 baht a year for a 30-year-old. If you are over 50 it climbs steeply.

**Tax.** Spend [180 days](https://easythailandvisa.com/thailand-tax-residency-180-days/) in a calendar year and you are a Thai tax resident. Counted across all entries, not per trip, so two 90-day visits trip it. The number that catches people is not the rent, it is this.

**Repatriation.** Every month you transfer money out you lose to fees, and every month you keep cash you risk theft. Use a bank, not a transfer service, once you are earning locally.

## Where the money is actually good value

Mai Khao, south of the airport, is the cheapest place in Thailand and nobody stays there for a reason. Nong Khai, on the Mekong, has a night market, a train to Bangkok, and almost no visitors. [Ranong](https://easythailandvisa.com/ranong-the-quiet-andaman-border-town/) on the west coast is the same and has better weather than the Andaman side in the wrong months. Uttaradit is a real city that has decided not to be a tourist destination.

Any of them will cost you 12,000 a month and be the most memorable of your trip.

**Before you budget, check your visa.** A month in Thailand and a ninety-day stay are completely different problems. The rules changed on 15 September 2026 and most nationality lists online are out of date. The [country-by-country guide](https://easythailandvisa.com/every-country-thailand-visa-guide/) is current.

Last verified 29 September 2026\. I will update this when the numbers move, which they do, usually in January.
